His CV is amazing: 张新军今年不到23岁，出生在户县的一个普通农家，初中毕业没考上高中，在西安国际高尔夫球俱乐部当保安，后来从保安到球童，张新军也逐步接触上了这项运动。当上球员，或许就能改变命运。“那时练球完全是为了生存。”张新军毫不讳言自己当时打球的初衷。 真正的转折点出现在2004年10月份，陕西省高协到西安国际高尔夫球俱乐部选苗子，当时还不到17岁的张新军被陕西省高协副秘书长丁杰看中，才真正开始自己的高尔夫球人生。“选拔时，张新军成绩并不是很突出，但从几次集训看，这小孩爱动脑子。” 接下来，陕西省高协支持张新军等球员参加了业余巡回赛，他夺得2007~2008年职业联赛配对赛的第一名，开始在业内小有名气。这个时候国家队开始选拔运动员，成绩突出的张新军入选国家队，成为西部地区唯一的国手。
